Boyhattan

...or Babyhattan, as it was then

When it comes to the least toddler friendly holiday, I used to think skiing ranked pretty high. But I think I have managed to trump myself. And all within the space of a month. For, dear bwb fans, I am taking Louis to Manhattan. Or Boyhattan as it shall henceforth be known chez L. What’s more: I am doing it by myself. Well, the flight bit. And most of the wandering around. DJ will be there – he’s going earlier for work – but by the sounds of it, he’ll be wall to wall.

My logic for going is simple. Pricey as those trans-Atlantic flights might be, they are a darn sight cheaper than they will be in June after Louis hits two. Which I realize means eight-plus hours (because whose flight has ever actually departed once you get on the plane? Not mine, for sure) with a hulking 21-month-old-to-be on my lap. And yes, that’s more than a little daunting. But hey, even if it’s a disaster, at least I’ll be doing something. And aren’t traumatic memories better than no memories at all? Or something like that.

What’s more, we won’t be alone in wreaking toddler havoc upon Boyhattan. No, Louis will have no less than two toddler friends with whom to run riot in the Met. Or whatever the hell else you do in a freezing March week with three boys under two. (And if anyone knows, please spill the beans!) As for whether Louis will ever get to go on a NYC trip he remembers – we were also there when he was seven months – well that particular jury is out. Maybe we’ll have to take a leaf out of the book of some friends who became parents last summer. They, too, are going to Manhattan (as they’ll get to call it). But alone, sans son. Incidentally, that particular fact was probably instrumental in pushing us to go. With Louis.

goodness me that's a long flight. i know what you mean about the prices though once they hit 2. I'm taking mine on three planes on my own in May just to get to England. sigh. not sure how good of an idea that is.

How old are they?? You'll be fine... Although three flights is impressive!! Good luck.

I think cities and kids are a great combination. I mean there's the metro to go on (how cool is that for a toddler?), elevators, central park with horses and carriages to look at, zoos, New York cabs - no idea about proper child entertainment, but you won't need it!

Have a great time. x

So much fun! I've done this a few times with Colette on my own, although the shuttle is much shorter. She loves running crazy in FAO Schwarz, the Apple store right next to it where they are pretty toddler friendly and of course the big hill in central park everyone climbs on and the long rock slide they have. We also did the Egyptian hall at the Met when it got too cold and she loved it. Enjoy!

Can you bring a CARES harness so you can snag an extra seat on the plane if there's an open one?

Thanks for the vote of confidence Brit! I love all that stuff. Also looking forward to the Bleecker Street playground (spot the ulterior motive!)

And Tori - wish Colette was coming too! (And you.) The harness looks like a great tip, but I can't really see Louis going for it. Like the idea of playing in FAO Schwarz. I had wondered about that. I just wish it wasn't going to be the beginning of March. Especially when we're up from 3am with jetlag!

Eek that's a long flight BUT I'm sure it'll all be ok - I found Toddlergirl was soothed by the sound of the plane engines and slept when we flew with her

That said I can understand the call of a break away sans small people ...

Wow Wow Wow!! How exciting is that! When are you going? Or have you done it already? Anyway good luck for the flight, should be fine. Whatever Louis think of the flight, it will be over in 8hours. I'll have 11hours + 2hours (internal flight to Fukuoka straight after) trip to Japan with Yoppy in August by my self. So I really hope you will have a happy easy flight, and please cheer me up later!! Have a wonderful time in Manhattan! Sonoko xxx

Sorry we haven't seen you for a while Sonoko and Yoppy-chan. Louis was sick. :(
I will report back on the flight... thanks for the good wishes. Please give Yoppy a kiss from me! xx
